Strategies adopted to achieve ODF status

Community led Program

Though the scheme is a government initiated one but for the purpose of implementation, it was made as peoples’ program and by them only. It had many benefits:

•         Participatory campaign restored their faith in the Government or say public service providers.

•         Even the committee formation was in front of the entire community and then they were asked to formulate a rough plan for taking the village to ‘ODF’ status

•         Community was involved to the extent that its heart and soul was into it.

•         Villagers were empowered to use slogan written caps, whistles and few torches etc. which helped them in monitoring.

•         They were motivated but motivating force within the villages varied.

•         Through constant interaction and triggering, they were made to realize that they themselves are capable enough to make the area 100% ODF.

•         100% sanitation can be achieved without subsidy and through social mobilization.

Communities were willing and able to build their own latrines without any subsidy but this requires good facilitation and intensive encouragement, for example inviting them to present their experiences in workshops. Villagers themselves narrated how they got involved into it.
